About this piece
Named for the golden age of Safavid court weaving, the Shah Abbas Crimson carries one of the most admired designs in carpet history into pure Kashmiri silk. Across a saturated crimson field, ivory and gold cloud bands curve like brushstrokes between large palmettes, lotus blossoms and rosettes in sky blue, saffron, teal and black. Fine scrolling vines tie the whole composition together, so the eye keeps finding new detail the closer you look.
The field is enclosed by a deep navy main border of interlaced flowers and vine-work, set between slender guard stripes and finished with a crimson binding and natural fringe.
Every knot is tied by hand in silk on a silk foundation at a 24 x 24 density, roughly 576 knots per square inch, which is about 2.9 million knots across this carpet. That density gives the crisp, almost painterly drawing you see in the curves of each cloud band, and the silk gives the carpet its liquid sheen: the red glows deeper or brighter depending on where you stand and how the light falls.
Ideal as a statement piece in a living room, study or majlis, or displayed on a wall as fine textile art.
