About this piece
In Kashmiri kalamkari, motifs are first drawn by hand with a kalam (pen), then filled with fine silk embroidery. This shawl is covered almost edge to edge with paisleys, vines and blossoms in taupe, rose, lilac, sky blue, olive and saffron, finishing in a deep paisley border above plain blush ends. It is rich and lively, yet softened by its pastel ground.
